There are times not to look back as you write.
I’m a strong believer in writing from your heart and get the story out so that I can come back and do the overview of missing pieces and holes still exist. Then put my thinking, analytical hat on … ready to start rewrites and the first round of editing with my head. But it’s about timing … when the time is right.
This week, my co-author Brian and I are deep into a major section of our third book—The Secret Rise—that we are pushing to have finished before year-end. I’m someone who wants to aggressively write through and get the storyline written creating the full big picture, no matter how rough it is. Brian wants to revisit earlier sections now, filling in the holes that are done versus writing forward and leaving dangling pieces of chapters that need to be addressed.
For me, it’s a step backwards versus staying in a forward motion with creating the story so the characters can talk to me … guiding me to where we can go in places neither of us had in our notes.
One of our agreed solutions was to come up with a weird word that could be added to any “hole” to satisfy Brian’s need to make sure we come back to it … and my need to move forward. It is placed in front of a paragraph that leads to the section that needs are creative juices.
Then, when we are ready for addressing rewrites, all we need to do is put our weird word into the “find” box on our manuscript and address each section.
My truthiness … Don’t sabotage creative flow and end up with writing sabotage.
There are times not to look back. Yet. Forward we go …
