The Year of the Fire Horse … Means Getting Comfortable with Discomfort

Wouldn’t it be the cat’s meow if you were always surrounded with cozy and comfortable?
Yes, wouldn’t it be? But rarely is it. As an author—I can excel at creating discomfort in my books—whether fiction or nonfiction as I share a story or create one. And yup, sometimes for me … and sometimes for my readers. For a fiction book, it was time to “kill a darling” as Stephen King says. So the decision was in front of me, do I really whack the character and just let him fade away. The choice was to do the whack job and indeed, my readers cheered when I took the brother down in book 3, The Secret Rise.
Sometimes, my writing can be shocking to some as it was in the above. Sometimes in my nonfiction books that dealt with toxic workplaces, I was holding the mirror up and what was looking back in the scenario was the reader herself. For me, I know that what I reveal can be a rude awakening; it can be action goosing … it can get people off their duffs … and it can change lives. Yes … it can be uncomfortable.
If the intent of what you do this Fire Horse year is to provoke change, you’ll be creating discomfort for some, including yourself. Guaranteed.
We writers are the weather barometers with our words. Sometimes we reflect current thoughts and happenings; other times, we become forecasters.
Change is uncomfortable—it’s easier to talk about the latest movie or what you had for dinner last night.
What's a lot more difficult (but important and ) is to say all of the above and add, "… and this is going to make (some) people uncomfortable … and maybe, I’m included.”
This past week, another book for a business author I had the pleasure of working with was FINISHED … now the book launch is in the planning works; major work and mega hours have been spent getting to this point; smiles are on our faces … and yes, relief. All of us on the team are ready to proclaim, "This is going to help people, this is well-crafted, we are proud of this book and the author." And Jay Nakagawa’s The UnConventional Strategist will debut at the Barnes & Noble Southlands Book Fair on May 16—I’m excited to be there with him, introducing people who buy my books to him.
Change. Love it and sometimes hate it. But accept it … and for me personally, I’ve always found change to be a good thing. Uncomfortable at times. But in the end, a bridge to good things.
My advice: be comfortable with discomfort.
My best to you,
